Pause the Check ("the app") is a self-help practice tool for the urge to check on a health worry. This policy explains how the app handles your information. The short version: your information never leaves your phone.
What the app stores
When you use the app you may enter:
- Each time you note an urge to check: when, what kind of check (if you pick one), how long you planned to wait and how long you waited, what happened next, and any 0 to 10 urge rating you chose to give.
- Notes you write for later, and on which days you chose to keep each one.
- Answers you write to the "What would I tell a friend?" questions.
- Your settings: your wait length, the order of the check types, and your notes time if you turn it on.
- Whether you have seen the welcome screens.
Your notes and answers are about your health. We treat them as health data, which is one reason none of it ever leaves your phone.
All of this is saved only in the app's private storage on your device.
What we collect
Nothing. The developer does not collect, receive, store, sell or share any personal or usage data.
- There are no accounts or sign-in.
- There is no analytics, crash reporting or advertising software in the app.
- The app has no permission to use the internet. It cannot make network connections of its own. The only time anything opens outside the app is when you tap a link, a phone number or the text button on the help screen (see below).
- There are no in-app purchases.
- The app does not ask for your contacts, location, camera, microphone or files. It asks to show notifications only if you turn on notes time.
Notes time (optional)
If you turn it on, the app shows one notification a day at the time you choose, only while you have notes waiting. It always says the same thing: "Your notes are ready." It never shows what a note says. It is scheduled by your phone's own notification system, and your phone may restore the schedule after a restart. No push service or server is involved, and the developer never learns whether you use it.
The wait screen
While a wait is running the app keeps your screen awake so the timer stays visible. Nothing else happens in the background.
Links, phone numbers and texts
The help screen has buttons that open your phone's dialler with a number filled in (NHS 111, 999, Samaritans) and a button that opens your messages app with a text to Shout ready to send. You choose whether to call or send. The help and About screens also link to websites (NHS 111 online, the NHS page for referring yourself for help with anxiety, Mind, the NHS health anxiety page and Find A Helpline). If you tap one, it opens in your web browser and that website's own privacy policy applies. The app does not tell any website or service anything about you.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data stays on your device until you delete it. You can delete everything at any time from About, "Delete everything". It is not included in your phone's cloud backups or phone-to-phone transfer, so it is never copied to Google Drive or a new phone. Uninstalling the app also deletes everything. Because nobody else has a copy, it cannot be recovered, and there is nothing for the developer to delete on request.
Screen privacy
On Android, the app hides its content in the recent apps screen. This also means screenshots and screen recordings of the app are blocked.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Not medical advice
Pause the Check is a self-help practice tool. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. For medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, talk to a healthcare professional.
